I was working on a sequence assembly project and doing some gene prediction work for a professor's course and what I came across was quite fascinating. The nematode worm - Wucheria bancrofti seems to have a bacteria known as Wolbachia sp. living inside it. It has been known that Wucheria causes serious diseases like elephantiasis and filariasis, and whats even more significant is that if you kill the bacteria living inside this worm (with antibiotics), the worm seems to die off as well!! That is truly fascinating! Imagine the kind of signaling/communication that goes on in between the two - the worm and the bacteria. Such levels of symbiosis is what makes a signaling pathway so significant! Definitely something to look into -
